The Bills are sinking and Stefon Diggs’ brother — Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs — wants someone to throw the star wide receiver a life jacket.
“Man 14 Gotta get up outta there 😫😭,” Trevon tweeted late Monday night after the Bills’ stunning 24-22 home loss to the Broncos.
It’s always notable when a family member or someone close to a star athlete speaks on the player’s status with a team.
Trevon, in theory, should have a pretty good insight into what Stefon is thinking, and there have already been questions about Stefon’s happiness in Buffalo.
Stefon lashed out during the Bills’ home loss to the Bengals in the AFC Divisional Round last season, and questions loomed about whether he wanted to be in Buffalo.
The Bills and Stefon put on their happy faces in the offseason, but that optimism is harder to come by as the Bills are one of the biggest underachievers this season.
Buffalo has now lost games to the Broncos, Jets and Patriots – in addition to setbacks against the Jaguars and Bengals – and still has road games on tap against the Eagles, Chiefs, Dolphins and Chargers, along with a home game against Trevon’s Cowboys.
Monday’s loss marked the Bills’ third in their past four games, and Stefon had a quiet night while blanketed by Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II.
He finished with season-lows in catches (three) and yards (34), having grabbed at least five catches and at least 58 receiving yards in every other game.
Trevon’s tweet may seem unlikely to come to fruition as Stefon signed a four-year, $104 million extension featuring $70 million in guaranteed money last April and it makes little football sense for the Bills to move him.
Stefon is under contract with the Bills through 2027, and the Bills would have a lot of dead money on their books should they trade him.
Trevon — who is sidelined for the rest of the season with an ACL tear — and the Cowboys certainly could use an upgrade at wide receiver in their quest to push past the Eagles and 49ers — even if the Giants made Dallas’ secondary receivers like Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup look like Hall of Famers last Sunday.
The Bills and Stefon will try to get back on track at home Sunday against the Jets.
