Senator Ted Cruz has criticised Democrats for not caring about the border crisis -calling their response “cynical politics” and arguing Texas has had to pay the price for the surge in migration.

Mr Cruz appeared on Fox News where he reigned down on Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ “pitiful” performance when he faced the Senate Judiciary committee to discuss the failings at the US-Mexico border on Tuesday.

“One of the most dismaying things seeing secretary Mayorkas’ pitiful performance at the hearing today is the disaster at the southern border is not an accident it’s by design,” Mr Cruz said on Fox News.

“They are intending this catastrophe to unfold and the only explanation as to why is that they believe as a matter of crass partisan politics is that if you let millions and millions of illegal aliens in that many of them in future years will vote Democrat and so they’re willing to overlook everything else.”

The United States has seen a record surge of illegal immigrants cross the border since the Biden administration won the White House.

Secretary Mayorkas confirmed on Tuesday at least 1.7 million encounters have been made by border patrol agents during 2021, and it’s expected to reach 2 million by the end of the year.

The Texas senator went onto criticise Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and senate members of the Democrat party for failing to properly visit the southern border and see the crisis for themselves.

“They don’t care, it is pure cynical politics and I got to tell you in Texas we’re paying the price,” he said.

“When I am down on the border talking to farmers, ranchers, sheriffs and law enforcement; they are fed up. Fed up with the crime, with the disease, the poverty.

“It is overwhelming the state of Texas.”
