There may not be a hotter bat in Major League Baseball than Miami Marlins infielder Luis Arráez.
Arráez went 5-for-5 for the second time in the Marlins’ last three games and is now batting .400 on the season as Miami beat the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 11-0 on Monday
It marked the third time this season that the infielder has had five hits in a game, with the fifth hit coming off Mitchell White in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in a run.
Arráez knocked the ball sharply to left field for the RBI single and then emphatically high-fived the Marlins’ first base coach as the crowd inside LoanDepot Park cheered.
Fans inside the ballpark also cheered “M-V-P” for Arráez’s effort.
Arráez has been on a tear this season and now joins the likes of Dave Winfield (1984), Ty Cobb (1922) and George Sisler (1921) as the fourth player in MLB history to have three five-hit games in a single month.
He is also one five-hit game away from tying the league record for most in a season, which currently stands at four.
Monday marked the first time since 2017 that any major leaguer had recorded three five-hit games in a season, which was accomplished by Atlanta’s Ender Inciarte that year.
If that wasn’t enough, Arráez became the first player this season to reach 100 hits when he hit an opposite-field single to left in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Arráez has 11 hits over his last 14 at-bats and he surpassed the franchise record for most five-hit games in a single season, which had been previously held by Juan Pierre who had two in 2005.
The Marlins’ win was their fifth consecutive victory.
Miami is now 11 games over .500.
