Yankees starter Carlos Rodon isn’t going to win over many Yankees fans after Wednesday’s outing.
In the middle of being lit up for six runs in 4 1/3 innings, New York’s biggest offseason acquisition blew what appeared to be a sarcastic kiss into the stands near the visiting dugout in Anaheim.
The gesture was caught by the Amazon Prime broadcast cameras as Rodon was walking off the field following the second inning, during which he surrendered his second home run of the game.
The lefty appeared to look into the crowd, bring his pitching hand to his lips and then motion a kiss into the stands.
“See Rodon walking off after that last inning, there’s a lot of Yankee fans here, and he’s hearing it a bit,” Yankees analyst David Cone noted as the broadcast showed a replay.
The Yankees had been trailing 4-0 when he made the motion toward the stands and were down 6-0 by the time Rodon, 30, exited.
His ERA now stands at an abysmal 7.36 through his first three Yankees starts.
The Yankees signed Rodon to a six-year, $162 million contract in December, but his debut was delayed until July 7 due to a forearm strain and then back tightness.
Rodon’s first two starts of the year since coming off the injured list hadn’t gone quite his way either.
He has lost both outings to begin his Yankee tenure, allowing six earned runs in his first 10 1/3 innings before Wednesday’s poor start.
The Yankees as a team aren’t playing much better after the All-Star break, having dropped five of their last six games.
The Yankees had entered Wednesday’s game in sole possession of last place in the American League East and three games back for the final wild card spot.
