Healthcare workers in London are being aided with the deployment of 200 armed forces personnel.

Workers are welcoming the assistance but the Royal College of Nursing said this demonstrates an undeniable staffing crisis in the NHS.

Barnet Hospital is struggling as there is a shortage in hospital staff and beds, forcing patients to wait in ambulances until there is space available to admit them.

Divisional Medical Director Sarah Stanley said she is concerned about the bed shortage as ambulances cannot offload patients and respond to calls.

“You might have five or six ambulances waiting 60 minutes or longer and cumulatively that time across London is ginormous,” she said.
